In pre-modern times there were three types of school in Japan: (1) feudal principal schools; (2). temple schools and (3). feudal public schools. The author of the article, Candidate of Pilological Sciences Aleksey Prasol, gives the greatest attention to the first type of schools. Feudal principal schools had the closest connections with the local authorities in numerous apanage feudal principalities of the country. Most of schools were established and run by ruling feudal clans. Therefore they may be considered as the main part of educational system of the times of bakufu government. Subjects of the description are: origins of such well-known features of contemporary Japanese schools, as persistence of ritualized tradition; formality, order and discipline (fixed not only by established rules, but also by moral example); complicated and at the same time perfectly arranged relations between all the people, involved in school life, and other essential notes.
